Imagine standing face-to-face with a 7-foot alligator, its jaws snapping just inches from your hand. That’s exactly what Florida coach Jon Sumrall experienced during a recent promotional photoshoot—and let’s just say it wasn’t your typical day at the office. But here’s where it gets controversial: Was this a bold move to connect with Florida’s iconic gator spirit, or a risky stunt that crossed the line? Let’s dive in.
Sumrall, fresh off his first spring practice at Florida, recounted the heart-pounding encounter with a mix of humor and humility. ‘I’m pretty sure I’d look like Chubbs from Happy Gilmore if that gator had gotten too close,’ he joked, referencing the infamous movie scene where a character loses a hand to an alligator. ‘Yeah, it was cool, man,’ he added, though he admitted it was also ‘a little nerve-racking.’
Here’s the part most people miss: Sumrall expected a tiny, harmless gator—maybe a foot-long, mouth taped shut, like something you’d see on a Louisiana riverboat tour. Instead, he was greeted by Helena, a full-grown, 7-foot alligator from a nearby farm. ‘I’m like, Hang on, what am I doing here?’ he recalled. ‘They said, ‘We’re taking pictures, and you can get this close.’ I’m like, ‘During COVID, I wasn’t even allowed to get this close to people—let alone an alligator!’’
Helena, while relatively calm, was far from trained. She wandered in and out of shots as Sumrall flipped a football, but the real drama began when she turned her attention to him. ‘Just as I started to feel comfortable, I thought, Alright, this thing isn’t going to do anything crazy,’ he said. ‘Then, I’m 4 or 5 feet away, and she starts hissing and snaps. I’m like, What the hell is going on? I’m out of here!’
Spoiler alert: He didn’t actually run. Helena calmed down, and they finished the shoot. But the experience left a lasting impression. ‘I’m not exactly looking forward to the next time this pops up on my schedule,’ Sumrall admitted. ‘But it was definitely a fun—and unforgettable—experience.’
Now, here’s the question: Was this a brilliant way to embrace Florida’s gator identity, or a risky move that could’ve gone very wrong? And more importantly, would you have stepped into that photoshoot? Let us know in the comments—we’re all ears (and hopefully, all hands still attached).
