"It's crazy to think we've known each other since we were kids, and now we're playing on the same team in the World Baseball Classic," Vientos shared. "We were all shortstops back then, and now look at us!"
But here's where it gets interesting... their paths to this moment are as unique as their personalities.
Downs, the first-round pick, traded multiple times, found himself playing for the Fukuoka Softbank Hawks in Japan before joining his friends on Team Nicaragua. Zamora, the only remaining shortstop in the trio, has been honing his skills in the Brewers' organization, waiting for his chance to shine.
And Vientos, the most successful of the three, made his big league debut with the Mets, showcasing his talent and determination. But with the Mets signing Jorge Polanco and Bo Bichette, he finds himself in a competitive spot, eager to prove his worth.
"Playing in the World Baseball Classic and representing Nicaragua is a dream come true," Vientos expressed. "It's an honor to play for my family and the kids back home. I want to represent my country proudly."
The manager, Dusty Baker, unaware of their childhood connection, sees this as a huge advantage. With limited experience as a unit, having players who have played together before is a blessing.
"Knowing their strengths, their ranges, and their temperaments is invaluable. It's like having an extra layer of understanding," Baker said.
