Alberta's World Cup Hockey Dreams: A Whispered Possibility Amidst NHL Silence!
Could the electrifying roar of the World Cup of Hockey soon echo through the arenas of Alberta? While NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman remained tight-lipped about the specifics, he hinted at significant interest from the province in hosting this prestigious international tournament. This has ignited a buzz of excitement, particularly in Calgary and Edmonton, as they eye a potential joint bid.
The World Cup of Hockey is set to make its grand return in February 2028, promising a thrilling display of the world's elite talent battling it out under their national flags – a format reminiscent of the Olympics and the recent 4 Nations Face-Off. The NHL has confirmed that the tournament will span locations across North America and Europe, but the exact host cities are still under wraps.
When pressed about whether Calgary and Edmonton were teaming up for a bid, Bettman acknowledged being "aware of the bid" but was unwilling to divulge any further details, including whether it was a collaborative effort or an independent one, or from whom it originated. He did, however, offer a tantalizing glimpse, stating, "Nothing has been finalized, but it was a good bid." He further elaborated during a media availability at the Scotiabank Saddledome, "I’m not prepared to tell you today that it was or was not the winning bid, but certainly it’s a bid that people could be very proud of."
But here's where it gets controversial... While the economic viability of hosting such a massive event is always a key consideration, the prospect of bringing the World Cup to Alberta seems to have garnered significant political backing. Calgary Mayor Jeromy Farkas expressed his enthusiasm, calling the "prospect of hosting events like this very exciting" and stating he was "very much in support of a potential bid." However, his support is contingent on a solid business case: "If you can show me the value for money, I’ll be the first cheerleader." He was scheduled to speak with Bettman on Tuesday night.
The Alberta government has also stepped up, pledging to contribute up to $15 million to support hosting the tournament should one of its cities be selected. This financial commitment could be instrumental in securing the bid.
And this is the part most people miss... A successful bid would not only bring international hockey glory to Alberta but would also mark the grand opening of Calgary's brand-new arena, Scotia Place. This $800-million facility, part of a larger entertainment district slated for completion in fall 2027, is designed to accommodate approximately 18,400 spectators. Bettman, after a visit to the construction site, was effusive in his praise, remarking, "I don’t think there’ll be a nicer building anywhere than that." He contrasted it with the Flames' current arena, which he described as "past its time," emphasizing the significant advancements in modern arena design.
Bettman remained firm on his decision to withhold details about other potential host cities, stating, "I’m not looking to encourage speculation. When the process is complete and we’re ready to make an announcement, we will."
The 2028 tournament would be a significant revival, occurring 12 years after Team Canada's victory in 2016, which followed their triumph in 2004. The NHL has indicated that the 2028 event will feature at least eight teams. However, the participation of Russia remains uncertain, depending on factors beyond the league's control, including input from the International Ice Hockey Federation and "the state of the world."
